Planning a CMU Wall or Opening

A block wall is more than its visible face.

Identify the wall

Provide wall thickness, height, length and its relationship to the building. Photograph both faces if accessible and include drawings or available construction information.

Document the structural details

Reinforcing, grout, footings, lintels and anchors may be part of the wall system. These should be specified by the appropriate project design rather than assumed from the appearance of the block.

Define finishes and interfaces

Paint, waterproofing, drainage, insulation and adjoining finishes affect the completed scope. Identify who handles each part, especially where a new opening meets existing construction.

Review removal and temporary support

Enlarging or creating an opening can affect the wall and what it carries. Required review and temporary support must be addressed before blocks or concrete are disturbed.

This guide supports initial project planning. It is not an engineering design, a permit determination, an exposure-control plan or a fixed-price proposal. Site conditions and applicable requirements must be reviewed before work is accepted.
