Concrete Cutting vs. Breaking

Choose the scope around what stays, what leaves and how it is handled.

Use cutting to define an opening or boundary

Sawing may be part of a utility trench, a door opening or a removal perimeter. The request should show the cut layout, depth, material and adjacent construction rather than simply asking for an unspecified cut.

Use breaking within a defined removal scope

Breaking is reviewed for slabs, footings, walls and other concrete that must be removed. The plan needs to account for reinforcement, the stability of what remains and the route used to load the debris.

Many projects need both

A replacement slab may need a cut at the part being preserved, breakout inside the limit and loading afterward. Ask for those stages together when the intended result is a clear space, not only a saw line.

Do not choose a method from appearance alone

Structural drawings, embedded utility information, access and protection requirements influence the method. Suspended, prestressed or load-bearing elements need the appropriate professional review before disturbance.

This guide supports initial project planning. It is not an engineering design, a permit determination, an exposure-control plan or a fixed-price proposal. Site conditions and applicable requirements must be reviewed before work is accepted.
